Thread: HyperSpark distributor install question.

  1. #1

    Default HyperSpark distributor install question.

I have a '84 302 Mustang with a recently installed HyperSpark distributor, Sniper EFI 4150 system, coil that comes with kit, etc. Install looks clean, but guy that installed it messed up a couple things. Installed fuel pump behind passenger fender well. In-tank pump is stock low pressure pump that was used on CFI injected cars for that year. Power & ground wires straight to battery, new NGK plugs, plug wires. Plug wires are not interfering with any Sniper wires, I checked that. I have NOT verified fuel pressure or timing yet. But did roll #1 to TDC and rotor is between #1 & #3 plug wire on cap.

Car is constantly breaking up, on occasion, will clear up for maybe a half second. Cars engine tone sounds different and power is not as smooth as with Edelbrock 650 that came off of it. I'm waiting on a USB SD card reader so I can attempt to read datalogs. Unfortunately, it's my father in laws car, and going back to original hack is out of question for tuning/repair on install (fuel pump).

As I understand it in the directions, the distributor is supposed to be dropped in straight up TDC, and the clear phasing cap took used. I have no idea if he used it. Is it supposed to be at TDC or 30° before? I've read conflicting info on here in relation to Reference Angle, etc. On 3.5" handheld screen, Static Timing is set to 1°. Idle Spark timing is 10°, Cranking Timing is default 15°, WOT is 32°, Cruise timing is 36°. Cruise and idle AFR is 14.7, and WOT is 12.5.

Oh, he also welded in WBO2 sensor at 4 o'clock pointing up about eight inches from collector.

    Modifications are:
    "B" Camshaft
    GT40P Heads
    1.7 Ratio Roller Rockers
    Shorty Headers
    No Catalytic Converters
Cam is set at the lowest level (Stock/Street). Sorry for long winded intro. Thanks for any and all help! Kevin

If you want to help him, you're gonna need a Windows based computer, so that you can read the GCF and the datalogs. Start a datalog at key on and start it. Warm it up for a few, and go drive it until the issue is prevalent. Zip up that datalog and post it here, and we'll take a look.

OK, I own a Chromebook. Hopefully that will work. I'll get a datalog posted up. I forgot to mention the long term fuel (GCF)? On handheld it's reading -33%.

If you're referring to the Learn Table, the GCF (Global Configuration File) is too rich, or at least that area of the Base Fuel Table is.

I can't remember if the Chromebook has a USB port? If it does, you're golden. If they do not have a built in SD card reader, you can buy a cheap adapter for the USB port.

I don't think a Chromebook will run the Sniper EFI software. All I have found is for Windows OS. Chromebooks use a Google OS.

OK. I have the EFI software downloaded to my sons pc (I have Chromebooks). I have the datalogs from the other day that I took, I believe five of them. One was like two minutes long, some are only 20 or so seconds. I don’t believe I have any datalogs with engine cold. The problem is there whether the engine is hot or cold. Please let me know how long the datalog should be and I'll get it done. Thank you.

Pardon me for my computer ignorance gentlemen & ladies. How do I send a zip file? I went to advance options and did not see anything where I could add a attachment? Thanks in advance. Kevin

Datalog & Global Files can be linked to a document hosting website. I use Dropbox.com.
Files can also be "zipped" (compressed zipped folder) & attached directly to a forum post ("Go Advanced" & "Attachments").
Your Config File is in the "Documents", "Holley" folder, "Sniper" folder, "Config Files" folder (.hefi file).
Your Datalogs are in the "Documents", "Holley" folder, "Sniper" folder, "Data Logs" folder (.dl file).
Someone will analyze/troubleshoot the problem & offer advice.

My son is going to send you the Config File and datalogs over his computer, since my laptops are Google OS. Do you have a specific email that we could send those files to? Thanks in advance. Kevin

I sent a datalog to Holley performance products forums. And I sent one to Training@holley.com.
UPDATE: My email was returned as it was not a valid email address.
