    Default Questions for 550-601 Installation

    Hi guys, be nice! I purchased two sets of Holley HP 550-601, for my marine 454 BBC MAG MPI. So happy to be removing all old EFI (Merc) wiring etc. I also purchased two Holley Digital Dashes. (I'm very new to this, but will always have a crack at it) I want to update all electrical on my engines. My original distributors are the ones with the GM ignition module on side. I think HEI. Also had an ugly coil eight inches away. My Questions:
    1) With the Holley HP EFI system, what are my options for Distributor & coil? Is there something better in 2021? My originals always had ignition module failures. (ON OLD MERC ECUs.)
    Can I run the Ready-To-Run marine Distributors with built-in ignition Module (no MSD ignition required) Part# 85603? Or is there an even better upgrade?
    2) With these new distributors do I run a coil? Or an MSD box?
    3) My old setup had a 50 amp breaker on the engine and some sort of solenoid beside it. DO I NEED THIS STILL? If so, is there a nicer/neater option like an MSD CDI box?

    You can eliminate the distributor all together and run LSx style coils on it. You'd need a crank trigger (crank & cam sensor would be optimal) and an oil pump drive. It’ll outdo most ignitions out there. No need for an MSD CDI box either. As far as the 50 amp breaker...no idea.

    Thanks 3 window, for the reply. I think for me that may be a step to far, but I appreciate the advice. I'm more looking at the right combo of distributor & MSD CDI box. Can you or anyone tell me if Marine Distributor PN 83606 with maybe MSD PN 6201 will work together, and is it a lot more reliable than what I have? Cheers, Aaron
    EDIT: I've just realized these don't work together! Just seeing if there's a better scenario then HEI distributor.

    With a BBC, why aren't you using a Holley HyperSpark distributor (LINK), or a Holley Dual Sync distributor (LINK) if you want a Coil-Near-Plug ignition system?

    They're a small cap design, "plug & play" with Holley EFI, and no need for a modified Firing Order.
    The Dual Sync crank & cam sensor signals also provide sequential injection capability (MPFI applications).

    distributors require a CD ignition box (Instructions), unless the Dual Sync is used with a CNP ignition system.

    A Dual Sync blank cap is available, if the user decides to convert to Coil-Near-Plug/DIS later (no CDI box).
    Of course, the Dual Sync distributor can also be used as a crank and/or cam sync/oil pump drive unit.

    Hi Danny, thanks for the reply. Why? Because I need them for Marine use, as stated in original thread. And as per the Holley website they aren't an option for marine use (that I can see). Apparently they need to have screened breathers in bottom under the rotor area. Now this is not my area of expertise, but if I can use them I would. HyperSpark would be good. But I'd like Holley to verify they are OK to use.

    In that case, I'd convert to Holley's Coil-Near-Plug ignition system (36-1 crank trigger kit and cam sync oil pump drive unit).

    Thanks 3 Window & Danny. OK, so CNP is the way. So if I have 550-601, I'll need:

    Universal Coil-Near-Plug Harness 558-307
    Chevy BB Cam Sync Plug MSD 85141
    Is this everything regarding ignition I need? Kind regards, Aaron

    Yes, those Holley EFI parts are compatible for a Coil-Near-Plug ignition system.
