Default Programming a new 6530 while not installed.

Hi Guys. I want to carry a spare AL2 Programmable as a backup on trips. How do I download my existing program into this unit without putting it on the vehicle. The existing program is saved on my laptop. Do I just need to hook the spare box to a +12V supply or do I need to swap it out with the existing box. Cheers, John

Hi John. You should be able to just power it up on the bench, with a decent +12V supply, two reds, and black, and your communication lead. Load your file, and you're done. Gary

I've done similar programming by just disconnecting the wiring from the installed/mounted module and temporarily connecting the new loosely/hanging module.

Hey guys. I'm doing the same thing and programming my backup box. Can anyone tell me how long my spare box will hold it's program data while not powered up?

It's probably non-volatile EPROM (Erasable Programmable Read Only Memory) memory storage even when the battery is disconnected, so it should permanently store your programming.

That's what I thought, but an MSD tech guy told me by phone that it would be best to program the unit afer install rather than pre-program it and store it. That made no sense to me, so I just wanted a second opinion.
