Thread: Cam & sometimes Crank signal error during cranking.

Default Cam & sometimes Crank signal error during cranking.

New Terminator X Max install with Holley Dual Sync distributor, SBC ZZ383 with Ramjet intake.

I've been working on this issue with Holley Tech for about 4 weeks now, two PCMs later still the same concern. During cranking the Cam LED turns Red and sometimes the Crank LED will also light up Red. I can take the distributor out of the engine connect it to the harness and spin it with my fingers and the fuel pump will light off and injectors will fire (No Red LEDs). I can put the distributor back in the block above cam gear engagement and spin the rotor and the fuel pump runs and the injectors pulse as I would expect. As soon as I drop the distributor down into the cam gear and crank it with the starter error LEDS for the CAM sensor come on. I have chased wires, checked pin positions, checked and added grounds, swapped starters, unplugged all the sensors from the intake, pulled the serpentine belt so no alternator input/output, unplugged the handheld, all with the same result. I had sent a couple cranking datalogs to Holley Tech and they said they looked good. I have come to believe it's usually something simple even after you've dug this deep into a problem, but I'm running out of ideas on this one. Any input would be appreciated. Thanks.

What's the cranking RPM speed and the starter cranking voltage?

Could the distributor shaft be in a different location in relation to the sensor when it's engaged with the cam?

@Danny Cabral: Cranking RPM 135-140. Cranking voltage 11V minimum.

@81TransAm: I don’t think so, the cam & crank sensors are both mounted on the breaker plate, they don't move at all.

The plate may not move, but the shaft may move and increase the gap at the sensor.

I thought the same thing, maybe possible, there's only about .008"-.010" of end play in the distributor, however. That being said, I rearranged the shims to drop the reluctor wheel .030" deeper in to the pickup with no change.
