Thread: Ford 5.0L system. Runs with a rhythmic miss.

Default Ford 5.0L system. Runs with a rhythmic miss.

I just put a Terminator X on my 331. Has a ported and modified Explorer intake, 70mm TB, Holley 36 lb/hr injectors, MSD Digital Programmable 6AL, and a Spector replacement TFI distributor. First start problems. Getting timing set, problems with the engine configuration, not Terminator related.

Getting idle stability. TERMINATOR problem! After the Wizard gets ran, it sets up with GM LS IAC. Found on forums where I need to go in with the software and switch it to Ford 5.0L & PWM (Pulse Width Modulation). Got the Frequency, Hold & Decay settings, from a friend with this system. Now it has idle control. HUGE fail on Holley for not having this setting happen with the Wizard or pre-configured in the ECU when it's packaged for the Ford kit. At least put the settings and process in the Ford Mustang instruction book. Even a video on how to set this up correctly. So now it runs and can idle OK.

It has an odd rhythmic stumble or misfire. It seems to miss in a consistent pattern on the tach. one drop, one drop, double drop, repeat. The way it does it has feeling like it's the distributor. I understand the distributor module is notorious for being bad, and have a Motorcraft one on the way, but it seems to me more likely the reluctor wheel or the pickup coil. Here's video of it.

I have a datalog of it taken right after the video, but the file uploader for this forum doesn't seem to recognize the file type. So is this a simple cheap ignition module problem, or something else?

What's the mechanical sound in the background while the misfiring is occurring?

Popping in the exhaust. So a Motorcraft ignition module fixed this!
