Question Grid With 7764 Power Module

I'm using the 7764 to control the nitrous solenoids. Do I need to use only the input wires to activate the timing retard? Or do I still need to have the step wire on the Grid activated to send signal to the input wires on the Power Module? I'd also like to know a suggestion on Frequency Hertz settings. Defaults are 10 on A and 1000 on B. I know most solenoids operate at 10-30 Hertz, should I set those frequencies to 10 on A and 30 on B?
