    Question HyperSpark Distributor Gear

Anyone know if the HyperSpark distributor for the SBC comes with a melonized gear?

Sometimes a quick Google search will provide answers. According to the Holley website, the gear for Chevy is cast. According to the installation manual for the HyperSpark distributors, the gear is cast and melonized. See page 7 of the instructions: https://documents.holley.com/199r11525.pdf. The specifications page at Holley.com state "cast". See the last bullet under Features: https://www.holley.com/products/fuel.../parts/565-300

You'll get different answers depending on who you talk to. The HyperSpark is built by MSD so the gear is most likely an MSD gear. Look at the MSD catalog to see what the options are. If you know what gear you need you can call MSD to confirm that they have that gear for a SBC distributor. Once you know exactly what you need you can call the Holley tech line and talk to them. They might connect you over to MSD. We had a customer who special ordered a Ford SB HyperSpark with the correct gear for his solid roller cam. In his case, he talked to Holley tech who connected him to MSD to get the correct gear on the HyperSpark. I think Holley has screwed up on the HyperSpark distributor by not offering all the gears that MSD offer. They'll probably fix that fairly quickly, since I'm sure they get a bunch of calls about this.

Please read the HyperSpark Distributor instruction manual. It clearly states which replacement melonized distributor gear to purchase.
See top of page 7: https://documents.holley.com/199r11525.pdf (Holley 565-300 HyperSpark Distributor Instruction Manual)

Thanks for your responses. I had already read the manual and that was the reason I was trying to verify what gear it came with. One tech at Holley told me it was melonized, but I found conflicting info so I went ahead and ordered the melonized gear.

Inspect the distributor gear to determine if it's melonized (LINK).

The issue that I've seen is that the instructions talk about which "replacement gear" to get, but they don't say which gear comes with the HyperSpark distributor. So if you go to Summit and order a HyperSpark distributor who knows which gear is on it. The instructions are not clear about which gear it comes with. The instructions do say that if you need a different gear you can get one. Like I posted above, we had one customer how had to call Holley and then talk to MSD to get his Ford HyperSpark distributor with the correct gear material.

The OP did call Holley. If the user can't determine if the distributor gear is melonized (LINK), purchase a new one that is.

If a cam is made from Austempered Ductile Iron, is an iron gear safe to use?
