    Question Idle Timing

I have a 347 stroker SBF with the HP EFI system. I seem to have a little bit of an overheating issue. When I sit still for an extended period of time, drive-through or sitting in traffic, the temperature really gets up there. It gets to 210°F and starts climbing from there. I sat in very slow traffic for about 20 minutes yesterday at night time, about 80°F outside, and my engine got up to 230°F and would just stay there, sometimes going to 231°F then going back down. I'm wondering if my idle timing being excessively retarded could cause a problem like this? I believe my timing at idle is about 14° from what I saw on my gauges. I have dual electric fans with a fit shroud, 3-core radiator, and I run distilled water with a Water Wetter additive. 180°F thermostat and my fans are set to turn on at 185°F and off at 182°F. Idle Spark control is on, with P-Term at 34, and D-Term at 47. Any help is appreciated, thanks.
347 SBF N/A hand built, 1991 Fox Body Mustang, rebuilt AOD, HP EFI 3.5" LCD display, 7" Digital Dash & both I/O Adapters. Dublin Ohio, 18 years old, built not bought.

Yes, it most certainly can. It's also a common overheating error.

I wouldn't run the idle timing that low. Try 20-25° at idle in the Base Timing Table. Ford EEC used 28° at idle (LINK) on a stock 5.0L engine.
May God's grace bless you in the Lord Jesus Christ.
