Thread: Knock sensor use with methanol?

    Default Knock sensor use with methanol?

    Any thoughts on using the knock sensor on a naturally aspirated SBC with methanol as fuel. I'm leaning toward not using it, given the nature of the fuel and not really wanting to pull timing in a bracket car. This is a light weight tube chassis bracket race only car using (soon to be) a Dominator EFI V5. Thanks again to all!

    If the timing curve is set correctly, the knock sensors are not really needed. Think of them as a fail-safe device. Also, in a race car, the knock sensors may pick up other "noise" and interpret that as knock. Andrew

    I agree. If your ignition timing is tuned (especially for a repeatable application such as drag strip use), no need for knock sensors.

    Bracket engines running solid roller cams create a lot of mechanical noise. I'd say you don't need the knock sensors. When I tune bracket cars that are "near the edge", I might use the knock sensors and just datalog the results, but not retard the timing. This tells you if you really need it., and the answer is usually no.

    Thanks gentlemen, as always I appreciate the knowledge & response. It's a roller, but no where near the edge! I'm still just working on wiring lengths and what's necessary or not. Shooting for a clean simple install. Very basic. Thanks.
