almost sounds like the resistor is not wired right ...
sound be all your ignition leads on one side ...the other side ran to coil positive (with the red lead from the Mallory)
I have a Mallory Unilite with 6AL and have wired everything acc.to MSD wiring diagram. The coil has only two wires connected, both from 6AL (orange and black).
The ballast is fitted to the red wire between the ignition switch and Unilite module. The wire from ingition switch is connected to one end of the ballast and the wire running to the Unilite module to the other end of the ballast. So, no they are not connected to the same end of the ballast.
