Thread: Rough idle & IAC all over the place.

Default Rough idle & IAC all over the place.

Got the Holley Sniper EFI installed on a fresh Ford 289. The setup is currently not controlling timing, running only a mechanical advance distributor. My issue I'm having is getting the idle to smooth out and hold what I have set. At the time the IAC will jump all over the place from about 5-28%. I have checked for a vacuum leak and have found none. All ports are blocked off, no leak between body & intake. I tried setting the idle in both methods (IAC blocked & unblocked). I noticed the car will idle great with the IAC covered with a piece of tape. The moment the IAC is uncovered it will go sporadic again searching in that 5-28% range. All wires are kept away from the spark plug wires. Any ideas on what could be causing this? Could the IAC be faulty? I've got about 150 miles on the system, with it running great except the idle. All help is appreciated!

I suspect that this is really a fuel tuning issue and your Base Fuel Table fuel is off in the idle area. I always have better luck running idle in Open Loop. Try enabling Closed Loop only above 1200 RPM, and then manually tuning the Base Fuel Table in the 9-16 cells around the idle area. Andrew

I use the Sniper EFI with a dual sync distributor to control timing. If I turn off Idle Spark control timing, will there be an adverse effect, beside lopey idle? I want my lopey idle if possible.

No adverse effect, except a slight decrease in idle quality. Try it & see.

I've been experiencing high idle not right after startup, but 20 seconds after startup, not as it was right after. I wonder what could cause this. The IAC is increasing as well, just like it was immediately after startup.
