Can the Sniper EFI system use the small cap HEI distributor for a timing control installation?

The Sniper EFI is intended to replace the carburetor on a carbureted engine. As stated in the Instruction & Quick Start Manuals, ECU controlled timing can only be achieved with a 2-wire magnetic distributor (locked centrifugal/vacuum advance & adjustable rotor) or the Holley EFI Dual Sync Distributor.

Sniper EFI does not support timing control with a small cap HEI.

OK, so what would be an inexpensive but decent distributor with timing control?

When you factor in the cost of an MSD distributor (LINK) & adjustable rotor (LINK), for a little more you can purchase the Holley EFI Dual Sync Distributor (LINK) & Holley 558-493 adapter harness.

Thanks for the info. I also found this in the instructions:
"Sniper EFI can control timing using most common magnetic pickup distributors currently available (example MSD). However, you may need to make several very simple changes to the distributor which are outlined in the following section. It is very important that you 'lock out' the advance built in to the distributor and install an adjustable rotor. Not 'locking out' the distributor and installing an adjustable rotor as outlined in these instructions, can cause the engine to run poorly or even cause engine damage."

Yes, I mentioned that (locked centrifugal/vacuum advance & adjustable rotor) in post #2. Most users won't want the hassle of locking out the OEM centrifugal/vacuum advance and modifying a phasing rotor for 50° of crank reference angle (LINK). The Ignition Reference Angle needs to be at least 10° higher than the maximum amount of timing used. 50° of Ignition Reference Angle allows you up to 40° of timing advance (in the Base Timing Table). The Holley EFI Dual Sync Distributor (LINK) is the quickest & easiest way to achieve ECU timing control. It's installed "as is" (no distributor modifications) & "plug & play" (with Holley 558-493 adapter harness).
