Thread: What caused my pump to burn up?

    Default What caused my pump to burn up?

    Holley Red Pump - about 3 years old with about 10k miles. Mounted to the frame below the fuel tank, fuel filter installed before the pump, and is clean. Good ground. What could have caused this to happen? Don't want to have this happen again.

    Looks like heat to me.
    Did you have a 10 gauge wire powering the pump? Low volts will cause the pump to work harder. Use a relay and take the power for the pump off the altternator where the volts are the highest. Too much restriction before the pump will also cause it to get hot.

    Looks like the wiring overheated from voltage drop, causing the amperage draw to increase. Ensure you're using at least 10 AWG wire to the pump for +12V & ground. Also, ensure the pump is receiving 13.5+ (charging system) voltage and a good ground (full continuity).
