  • Not sure about locking distributor.

I've been doing some reading about people benefiting at lower RPM by locking out their distributors with a crisper idle and and generally better running engine. From what I've read, you lock out the distributor and remove or lock the vacuum advance at the same time. The claim is that all your mechanical advance is in full time and your engine benefits from being more advanced at low RPM than it normally would be and the same at high RPM. This all makes sense to me, except the vacuum advance part pf the equation. On my engine with vacuum advance I have as much as 51 of timing part throttle and it falls off to 38 at WOT. It seems to me locking the distributor at 38 penalizes you 13 of advance during part throttle driving. What am I missing?

This ignition timing advance is easily programmed on a Laptop/PC, if you have ECU controlled timing (Holley EFI Base Timing Table), or a programmable ignition controller (laptop/PC software timing map).
