  • Terminator X V2 won't go into Closed Loop!

I’ve just finished installing a Terminator X V2 with the CAN Input/Output module on a 2180CC Turbo Air-cooled VW. Finally got the tune sorted out and ready to start. Starts up & runs, but it won't go into Closed Loop no matter what I do. I’m not a newbie to Holley EFI systems, I've installed and tuned quite a few of them, but this one is making me pull my hair out! I’ve even tried installing new firmware and a whole new tune from a different laptop, just to see if the tune was somehow corrupted, but nothing changed. Datalog shows no abnormalities, sensor signals are all clean. Temperature Enrichment is set at 100% and A/F Ratio Offset are at zero. All boxes are checked enabling Closed Loop & Learning. Also the crank & cam sensors are dead on. Could it be a bad ECU? I've never had one that wouldn’t go into Closed Loop. Everything is perfect if it would just enter Closed Loop. Any suggestions or help would be greatly appreciated.

Check your Closed Loop/Learn Parameters. "Enable Closed Loop" and "Base Fuel Learn Enabled" are the only two parameters that need to be check marked.

Without looking very far, I see this in System Properties under Closed Loop. I'm sure you tried simply unchecking that box to NOT hold off Closed Loop by minimum temperature?

I've always checked that box on all my Holley EFI systems I've tuned, and I always leave the Minimum Coolant Temperature at 0°F until tuning is completed. My Sniper that's on my Bug now that's fully tuned still has the Minimum Coolant Temp set at 0°F. That’s what’s making this so confusing.

So I just unchecked the box. No change, still not going into Closed Loop. I'm at a loss.

While it's running, look at the Coolant Temp Enrichment. Does it actually say 100% or does it say 100.1%? Andrew

This is exactly what I was going to suggest next. The EFI software won't actually display 100.1% in the Coolant Temperature Enrichment % table (even if it is). You have to manually change them to 100%. ALL the numbers including and above 160°F should be at 100%.

The Terminator X EFI software has an odd glitch. If a selection of cells are highlighted and changed to a number that happens to be already entered into one of the highlighted cells, nothing happens. What I do is highlight all the cells above 160°F, set them to 90%, then back to 100%. Andrew

One way I've found to make this easier to spot is to copy/paste all the table cell values from the software into an Excel spreadsheet. That will show the decimal values if there are any.

Also, I noticed if the Heat Map is enabled on a table, that will show cells with difference colors even with just a .1 difference in values. So if true 100.0 values have red colored cells, any other cells with 100.x will show as something else.

Lastly, seems like anything up to 100.4 will round down to 100 being displayed, while 100.5 rounds up to next whole 101 making it easier to spot. The Heat Map does color 100.4, 100.3, 100.2, etc., as difference colors as well. Not sure it helps here, but just thought was worth sharing the nuances I noticed.

Just had a thought, since this is Terminator X. Are you using traditional TPS, or Drive-By-Wire throttle body, and is it required for you to add the DBW ICF and configure the correct DBW or non-DBW (LSx, LTx) in order to do a TPS Autoset? Could that be causing it not to go into Closed Loop? Again, I'm not a Terminator X or DBW expert, but curious nonetheless.

I've tried dropping the Coolant Temperature Enrichment down to 90°F, still no luck. I don't know what's going on. I've tuned another Bug last week with the same Terminator X, but running V1 instead of V2. I just looked back at his tune, and everything is set the same as mine minus the turbo. I'm running a throttle body from a Chevy Aveo, so it has the same TPS and IAC as the LSx. I'm starting to point my finger towards the ECU unit, but I still think it's a firmware or software issue, because everything other than that is working normally. I wonder if it could be something to do with the other CAN Bus accessories I installed i.e. Input/Output Module and the EGT sensor. I have to use V2 for them to work.

@Danny Cabral: It’s fixed. It was another corrupted tune! I’ve had corrupted tunes before, but usually things would be going wacky. The only thing that wasn’t working properly was the Closed Loop. Oh well, that’s one more for the record books! Thanks for your help anyway. I never post on forums. I can usually get the info just by reading what others have posted on here, but not this time.
