I've finally installed my Sniper system successfully in my 1968 Pontiac Firebird 400. Minus having the yellow Sniper wire hooked up to the HEI C-wire instead of the tach, everything went smooth and without a hitch for the installation.
Going out on my first test drive around the block, my car was backfiring from the actual Sniper. I noticed this under moderate acceleration or if I was going up a steep hill. But If I accelerated very slowly, I could gain speeds up to 35/40 MPH before the backfiring would occur. I actually got scared so I came back home and let it idle in the driveway in park as I revved it up with the air cleaner off. In doing so, there were flames coming from the Sniper barrels followed by backfiring. I proceeded to cut the car off at this point. One other point to mention, which I don’t know how to exactly describe it, but while idling, is as if my car had a “hiccup” in which it'd idle smooth then maybe for a quarter of a second it'd hesitate accompanied with a vibration.
Backfiring is a lean condition (I think) so I adjusted the cruising and idle AFR slightly, but that didn’t help. I didn’t want to go crazy punching in numbers not knowing exactly how it'd affect things. As I give it more thought, my car may be misfiring. Installed new plugs and the issue is still present.
I don’t know what other information is needed, but the timing is at 13°. I have the Static Timing set for this as well. The engine is all stock. Could this be EMI? A/F Ratios? I’ve attached the datalog. I’m no mechanic, but I did follow all of the instructions to the “T” for what I understood of them. Thank you for your time.
