  • DIS Coil Help

I'm in need of DIS coils! I have a bad one and just need to make them work until this winter, then I'll go Coil-Near-Plug setup. Does anyone have any? Or know of a replacement?

    Standard Motor Products DR-39 (LINK/LINK - $26.79) coil is a GM 10472401, ACDelco D555 coil.
MSD 8224 waste-spark ignition coils can also be used in place of the obsolete Holley EFI DIS coils.
The recommended Dwell Time for these MSD 8224 waste-spark ignition coils is 2.5 msec.

The coil interface/driver mounting base is not really the "wear item". Currently, the Holley EFI DIS ignition coils are still available (LINK). Holley DIS Wiring Manual: LINK.
If custom wiring the Holley waste-spark ignition system, the information & wiring diagram is in the Holley EFI Wiring Manual (LINK - section 8.10 "Holley DIS", pages 21-26).

Danny, how are these replacement coils wired? I can't find a picture that shows the connections, which I saw in the Standard Motor Products video appear to be on the bottom. It looks like there are only two terminals versus the four on the Holley coils. Do these use 1/4" male crimp connectors? Thanks.

This is just the ignition coil (two female spade terminals underneath). It plugs onto the Holley EFI or OEM ignition coil interface/driver mounting base (two screws) with a 4-wire connector. Examples: LINK & LINK.

Thanks, that explains it. I didn't realize they separated like that.

My son and I have been able to confirm we have a problem with two of the four waste-fire coils that's in the base, not the replaceable coil itself. Since I can't find a source for a direct replacement, we're looking to change to LSx style individual cylinder coils, but wondering if they will work without a cam sync signal so that the ECU knows when each cylinder is on its compression stroke. Or does the ECU fire all coils each revolution in a waste-fire mode so that no cam sync is needed?

You'll need to install a cam sync sensor.

I have a pair of waste-fire coils I could let go of. They only have a short amount of dyno time on them and are like new.

Thanks Danny, I thought that was the case.

Thanks acstudios, I did already find a set of new old stock coils so I'm good now. I'm sure there are others who do or will need them.
