  • Configuring Speedometer Output

    I'm using a Dominator EFI system with a factory electric TH400 speed sender using 40 PPR and a 2-wire pickup. I currently have it setup as a Digital Speed Input and it logs correctly and smoothly. I have a factory electric speedometer from a 87 Firebird, and I have connected the signal wire from the cluster to the output from the Dominator. The speedometer requires a 4000 PPM signal. I have the output setup as PWM+, but from there I'm unsure how I should configure the rest of it to get the speedometer to respond. Any help with this would be greatly appreciated.

    1) Your 2-wire pickup (sending unit) is an Inductive Pickup (IPU Speed Input).
    A Digital Speed Input is from a Hall-Effect sensor (3-wire).

    3) I only have a VSS Input (MPH displayed on Data Monitor, Datalogger, Gauge Panel & Digital Dash).
    This is how to enable the Speedometer Output Enable (PPM - pulses per mile signal):

    4) Upload the Transmission ICF and check mark "Speedometer Output Enable".
    Enter the correct Speed Calculation parameters (Tire Diameter & Rear Gear Ratio).
    You'll also need to select the "Speedo" Output Type PWM+/− in the Inputs/Outputs screen.
    This creates a +12V square wave Output that can be used to trigger an electronic speedometer.
    The "Speedo" Output must be Pin Mapped to an available "P+" or "P−" pin on Connector J1(B), J2(B) or J3.
    I realize the Transmission ICF Speedometer Output is displayed as PWM+/− (depending on the Output Type
    selected in the Inputs/Outputs screen), but the ECU outputs this as a +12V square wave "Speedo" signal.
    This is a PPM (Pulses Per Mile) output signal, not PWM+/−. Pin Map the Output & connect it to your speedometer.

    5) The Transmission ICF receives the VR Magnetic/IPU VSS signal on pin B18 of the J4 ECU connector. A Hall-Effect speed sensor
    won't work with the Transmission ICF. ECU pin B18-J4 accepts an "F" (Frequency/Digital Speed) and "S" (Inductive Speed)
    type Input. However, it's hard-coded as an "S" type Input, when the Transmission ICF is uploaded. For non-electronic
    transmissions, you don't necessarily need the Holley 558-404 J4 Auxiliary Harness kit, but without it, you'd have to purchase
    the J4 Connector, wiring & ECU terminals separately (LINK). The Holley 558-404 J4 Auxiliary Harness kit is everything you
    need, and also provides wiring access to one Sensor +5V Out & one Sensor Ground.

    Have you uploaded the Transmission ICF in the EFI software?
    (This same procedure applies to all the various Individual Configuration menu icons/items.)
    If the Transmission menu icon (ICF) isn't already uploaded (added) to the top Toolbar, follow these instructions:
    The "Transmission" function is an "Individual Configuration" of the Holley EFI software.
    At top of screen, Click "Toolbox" and "Add Individual Config".
    At top of new window, select "Individual Configuration Library".
    At bottom of new window, select "Holley EFI Transmission Config".
    Select "Transmission" and open "Base Config - Blank.transmission".
    The "Transmission" icon will then be present at top of screen.

    To connect up to 4 Inputs & Outputs to the EFI Main Harness, use I/O Auxiliary Harness 558-400.
    Eight Wire I/O Auxiliary Harness Connector Pin-Out (also in the Holley EFI Wiring Manual - LINK):

    The 558-400 I/O Auxiliary Harness is 20 feet long, and it's "plug & play" into the EFI main harness.

    Are you trying to send a PPM (pulses per mile) signal to a speedometer, or adding a vehicle speed sensor channel Input?

    The ECU Input must be named "Speed" (the correct "Speed" channel), and the Units set to Miles/Hour for the odometer to report distance accurately.

      Hi all. Just to confirm, and this seems like the most appropriate thread on speedometer connection.
      My transmission is TR6060 manual, factory VSS (2-wire). This is what I've done, but car not yet driveable to confirm working.

      Inputs screen: Created Name #1 = VSS Signal, set Type as "IPU Speed/Freq" because it's a VR type sensor, click the "Enable" box.
      Click "Configure". VSS Signal then configured Pulses to Average = 17 (initial setting), PPROT = 17 GM TR6060 pulses per rotation),
      gear ratio = 3.7 (my diff ratio), tire diameter = 26" (my tire diameter), minimum signal voltage = 0.1V or less (based on previous threads).

      Created Name #2 = VSS Signal, set Type as "Ground" on "Inputs" page, click the "Enable" box, no configuration needed.
      Click "Pin Map" on menu bar, drag, VSS signal wire to J2-A21 Pin (or any available "S" input pin), connected this wire to "A" wire on the VSS.
      VSS Ground wire to J2-A20 Pin, (or any available "G" input pin) set Type as "Ground" on "Inputs" page,
      connected this wire to "B" wire on the VSS. Click "Done" button.

      Then, load "Transmission ICF" (see your previous posts). Select "Transmission ICF".
      Leave the default "Transmission" section, as it only has specs for autos, E.G. GM 4L60/5E,
      even though I have a TR6060 or what ever other manual.
      Go to the "Speed Calculation" section.
      Enter Tire diameter = 26" (my tire diameter).
      Enter Rear Gear Ratio = 3.7 (my diff ratio).
      Tick the "Speedometer Output Enabled", and enter 4000 PPMILE in the box to suit speedo requirement.
      Leave the "Table Section" as default as its not applicable to manual trans.

      Select the down arrow next to the "Transmission ICF" on the menu bar, and select "Inputs/Outputs".
      Leave "Transmission Inputs" section as default, not defined.
      Go to "Transmission Outputs" section and change "Output Type" to PWM+.

      Click the "PIN MAP" button on the menu bar, select the "View Outputs" tab.
      Drag the "Speedo output" item from the "Unassigned Outputs" field down to Connector J2-B1 or any available "P+" output.
      Click "Done", save etc.

      Connected that J2-B1 wire to speedometer signal wire. Therefore, don't need J4 connector. Is this correct?
      I couldn't find all the answers in just 1 thread, and I found it very confusing to get to this point
      on whether I needed the J4 connector or not. Thanks for any clarity on this. Regards, Dave

        If you only need to create the Pulses Per Mile +12V square wave "Speedo" Output signal to operate a speedometer, then you don't need the Inputs/Outputs ICF at all. When you check mark "Speedometer Output Enable" in the Transmission ICF, the "Speedo" Output will automatically appear in the Pin Map.

        Connected that J2-B1 wire to speedometer signal wire. Therefore, don't need J4 connector. Is this correct?
        Yes, you need the Holley 558-404 J4 Auxiliary Harness because that's what the VSS sensor is actually wired to (the Transmission ICF, not the Inputs/Outputs ICF). If you actually had an electronic (ECU) controlled transmission, then you'd obviously use the the Holley 558-405 GM 4L60E/4L80E Transmission harness (as opposed to the Holley 558-404 J4 Auxiliary Harness). Yes, you also need the Holley 558-400 I/O Auxiliary Harness because that's what the "Speedo" Output signal is wired to. Or you can wire the "Speedo" Output signal to any available J1B, J2B or J3 PWM+/− pin.

          I also need the VSS signal so I can activate the reverse lockout, so that's why I Pin Mapped the VSS to J2B pins. Is this OK?

          Yes, you need the Holley 558-404 J4 Auxiliary Harness because that's what the VSS sensor is actually wired to (the Transmission ICF, not the Inputs/Outputs ICF). If you actually had an electronic (ECU) controlled transmission, then you'd obviously use the the Holley 558-405 GM 4L60E/4L80E Transmission harness (as opposed to the Holley 558-404 J4 Auxiliary Harness). Yes, you also need the Holley 558-400 I/O Auxiliary Harness because that's what the "Speedo" Output signal is wired to.

            The problem with that is, you can't split the VR Magnetic/IPU signal to two devices. However, there's no need to anyway.
            Once the VSS is wired into the ECU pin B18-J4, the Transmission ICF now has the "Speed" channel for creating custom I/O.

              OK, I think I'm understanding this a bit better. So VSS will only work on J4-B18 when the Transmission ICF is loaded.
              And I can wire the ground to J4-B14, both of which are reserved for this purpose when Transmission ICF are is loaded.
              No input setup necessary, the ECU is expecting it based on the Speedo settings in the Transmission ICF Inputs/Outputs page.

              For Speedo Output, I can Pin Map to any J1B, J2B, J3 as per #2 post above.
              And I still Pin Map an output on J1B or J2B for Reverse Lockout, that will pickup on the VSS signal input on J4B? Dave
